The classic loop — every first-timer highlight in one realistic day. Built on real driving times, not map optimism.
Distance: ≈ 160 km round trip · Time: 9–10 hours · Stops: 6 · Direction: south first, then north to the Mekong, back via the city.
This is the route nearly everyone comes to Chiang Rai for. The trick is the order: White Temple sits south of the city, everything else chains north. Do it in this sequence and you never backtrack.
13 km south of the city. Arrive at opening (08:00) and you’ll have the bridge of rebirth nearly to yourself; by 10:00 it’s tour-bus territory. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Entrance 200 THB for foreigners.
Cross to the northwest side of the city (~25 min). Ride the elevator up the giant Guan Yin statue (~40 THB) for a panorama of the whole valley. 45 minutes is plenty.
15 minutes north. Surreal black teak buildings full of bones, skins and provocative art — the perfect contrast to the morning's white temple. ~1 hour, 80 THB.
The drive north to Mae Chan takes longer than the map suggests — allow 45 minutes. Eat at the plantation café (decent Thai dishes, famous green-tea cake) while overlooking the terraces. Total stop ~1.5 hours including lunch.
Another 45–60 minutes north. The viewpoint where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet — golden Buddha, Mekong views, optional boat trip or House of Opium museum. 1–1.5 hours.
Head back south (~1 hour) and catch the Blue Temple before the light goes — it glows in late afternoon. Free entry, 30–45 minutes. Try the coconut ice cream outside.
Back in the city center. Khao soi at the Night Bazaar food court is the right way to end this day.

| Entrance fees (White 200 + Black 80 + elevator 40) | ~320 THB/person |

| DIY total, 2 people sharing a car | ~1,700–2,200 THB/person |

For comparison: a join tour runs around 1,200 THB/person with guide and hotel pickup (entrance fees and lunch extra) — so for 1–2 people, the tour usually wins on cost and effort. For 4 people sharing a rental car, DIY works out slightly cheaper — if you enjoy driving.
| Option | Cost | Comfort | Best for | Our take |

This exact loop is what the local 7 Highlights join tour does daily — hotel pickup, licensed guide, no navigation. Honest trade-off: fixed schedule and a shared van. If that suits you, it's the easiest version of this day.
