Is it worth it? Honest answer: not as a standalone trip — very much yes as part of a northern day. Here's how to do it right.
The Golden Triangle viewpoint itself is a 20-minute photo stop: a golden Buddha, the Mekong, and three countries on one signboard. If you drive 60 km just for that, you'll wonder why you came.
What makes the day great is the chain: tea terraces at Choui Fong, the Mekong atmosphere and opium history at Sop Ruak, and (if you have energy) the royal gardens at Doi Tung on the way back. That's a full, varied, genuinely memorable day.
An easy, flat 45-minute drive to Mae Chan district.
Walk the terraces before the heat, then green-tea cake at the café. 1.5 hours. Free entry.
~1 hour drive. Viewpoint, giant Buddha, House of Opium museum (~50 THB) — genuinely interesting history. Optional longtail boat on the Mekong. Lunch at a riverside restaurant. 2 hours total.
~45 minutes from Sop Ruak up a winding mountain road. Garden entry ~90 THB. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Skip if you're tired — the road is curvy.
