Local honesty: this is the route we tell friends to do independently. Grab rides between these three temples total roughly 300–400 THB — cheaper than any tour, at your own pace.

Grab from the city ~150–200 THB, 20 minutes. Beat the tour buses; allow 1–1.5 hours. Entrance 200 THB.

Grab across town (~25 min). Elevator up the Guan Yin statue ~40 THB. 45 minutes is enough.
11:15 — Blue Temple
Sapphire finale + coconut ice cream

Short Grab ride back toward the city (~10 min). Free entry, 30–45 minutes. The coconut ice cream stand outside is part of the experience.

The three temples are not variations on a theme

People assume that once you have seen one Chiang Rai temple you have seen them all. These three are the opposite of that — they are three different men's ideas of what a temple is, built within twenty years of each other, and the contrast is the actual reason to do them in one go.

The order matters more than the timing

The White Temple is 13 km south. The Big Buddha is 9 km north-west. The Blue Temple is 3 km north of the centre. Do them in that order and it is one clean arc; do them in any other order and you cross the city twice.

This is the whole trick of the half day. At 08:00 you walk the bridge alone. By 10:00 there is a queue for it. Nothing else on this route rewards an early start as much.

Across to the north-west, about 30 minutes. Take the lift up for the valley view, then the pagoda next door.

Blue Temple
Fifteen minutes back towards town. Small, free, and busiest in the middle of the day — but it is indoors and the light inside does not care about the hour.

Doing it yourself with Grab

This is one of the few routes in Chiang Rai where you genuinely do not need a tour, and we would rather say so.

Split between two people that is around 250 THB each, plus 240 THB in fees — under 500 THB for the morning. The one thing to watch: Grab out to the White Temple is reliable, and Grab back from the White Temple is usually fine but not guaranteed, so do not leave it to the last car of the day. You need a Thai SIM to use Grab at all — see getting around Chiang Rai.

Dress code: shoulders and knees covered at all three. The White Temple enforces it properly and lends sarongs at the entrance; the other two are relaxed about it but you will feel out of place.
