Places worth your time, split the way locals think about them: what you can reach on foot or by bicycle from the center — and what needs wheels.
Everything below is within walking or cycling distance of Chiang Rai's town center — no car needed. A tuk-tuk or shared songthaew works for the furthest spots.

These need transport — rental car, private driver, or a join tour. Most are 20–80 km from the city center. Plan at least a half-day for each direction.

Seeing them all in one day
Most of these places sit 30–60 minutes apart and no bus links them. We run the classic loop as a small-group day tour — the White and Blue Temples, the Black House, a hill tribe village, Choui Fong tea plantation, the Golden Triangle and the Opium Museum. Hotel pickup, air-conditioned van, English-speaking guide and a Thai lunch are included. Nine seats only, and you pay in cash on the day.
