Honest version: if the White Temple is the only thing you want to see, do not pay for a tour. Take the bus or a Grab, spend an hour and a half there, and come back. A tour only earns its money once you add the places the bus does not reach.
Buses leave from Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1, the old terminal in the middle of town near the Night Bazaar — not the newer Terminal 2 out on the ring road. They run roughly every 20–30 minutes through the day and stop at the temple entrance, so there is no walk at the other end.
Expect 20–30 THB per person each way and 20–30 minutes on the road. Pay the conductor on board; tell them "Wat Rong Khun" and they will call it.
The same buses pass the temple heading north. Services thin out late in the afternoon and stop in the early evening, so do not plan to leave the temple at dusk on a bus you have not checked. Ask the driver on the way out what time the last one runs.
A Grab from the city centre to the White Temple runs about 120–150 THB for the car, which splits nicely between two or three people. Getting there is never a problem.
The catch nobody mentions: Grab drivers cluster in the city. Standing at the temple gate 13 km out, your return request can sit unanswered for twenty minutes or more, especially at midday. Either ask your driver to wait, agree a return time with them directly, or plan on the bus back. There is usually a taxi stand near the car park as a fallback, but you will pay tourist prices for it.

A private car with a driver for the day costs roughly 2,000–2,800 THB. For a couple that is poor value if you only want the White Temple. For a family of four who want the temple plus a few other stops at their own pace, it is often the most comfortable answer, and it removes the return-journey problem entirely.
Agree the full route and the price before you set off, and be clear whether waiting time is included.
A shared day tour costs around 1,200 THB per person plus entrance fees. On the White Temple alone that is worse value than the bus, and we would rather tell you so.
Where it changes is the northern loop. The Golden Triangle is about 60 km from the city, Choui Fong tea plantation and Doi Tung are 35–60 km out, and Grab does not work reliably at any of them. Fitting those into one day without your own vehicle is genuinely difficult, and that is the day a shared van pays for itself — the White Temple is simply the first stop on it.

Entry is 200 THB for foreign visitors in 2026; Thai nationals go free. The grounds open at 08:00, but the ticket office shuts well before the gates do — treat 16:30 as your latest sensible arrival and you will not be turned away.
Most people need an hour to an hour and a half. It gets crowded from late morning; before 09:00 is calm and photographs far better, and the white surfaces are blinding at midday, so bring sunglasses.

Roughly 15 km and about 25 minutes, because you drive back through the city — the Blue Temple sits on the north side of town. Entry there is free, and an hour covers it comfortably.
